This course is suitable for students who wish to understand the language issues in Hong Kong society. This course takes students through a survey of research findings on language issues in Hong Kong, together with a study of related readings, and a series of activities that are related to key questions in this field.

Aims
The course aims to introduce students to the systematic study of language and society, and increase students' awareness of a number of language issues in Hong Kong.

Contents
The course covers the following topics:

The Hong Kong speech community
The sociolinguistics of Chinese and English in Hong Kong
Cantonese–English code-switching
Linguistic variation
Language and gender
Language planning and education

Learning support
There will be regular two-hour tutorials and supplementary lectures.

Assessment
There are three assignments and a final examination. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
